Kirkdale Cave

Kirkdale Cave

Situated in an old quarry by a ford not far from Kirkbymoorside, Kirkdale Cave was made famous by the excavations of the geologist the Reverend William Buckland in 1820. Fossils of extinct prehistoric mammals were found here; these had important repurcussions for scientific thinking of the time and in fact helped paved the way for Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

Kirkdale Cave is one of the most well known caves in the North York Moors area, with a labyrinth of passages having already been explored. Local folklore has it that passages exist which connect with Manor Vale Cave in nearby Kirkbymoorside, but if these ever existed they have yet to be rediscovered.
