Caves and Caving in the North York Moors

Kirkdale Cave

Unlike the limestone country of the Yorkshire Dales to the west, the North York Moors area, does have some caves which can be found in the Jurassic limestone.

The geology here is significantly less karstic than the limestone areas of the Yorkshire Dales and so the caves here are far smaller and fewer in number. Known for centuries however have been Kirkdale Cave (pictured above), Fadmoor Cave and Manor Vale Caves in Kirkbymoorside with more recently discovered examples being Excalibur Pot and Bog Hall Rising which are currently undergoing exploration.

The area is also known for its windypits, slip rift potholes which can mainly be found in and around the southern end of Ryedale. Like Kirkdale Cave these have also yielded prehistoric remains.
