In the autumn (usually in October) the market town of Pickering has over the years hosted a very popular 1940s wartime weekend.
Much of the event takes place around the North York Moors Railway, with authentic steam trains departing regularly for Levisham (or "Le Visham" as it is called for the weekend) - where a French village occupied by German troops is recreated !
Back in Pickering itself there are parades of 1940s military and civilian vehicles (including tanks, armoured cars, trucks and vintage sportscars), as well as British soldiers, American G.I.s and a whole host of civilian characters (including the odd "spiv" here and there)..
Whether you visit in period dress or just as a sightseer, the Pickering 1940s wartime weekend is an event to be experienced!
